Vintage Dance Events

Here is a list of what is coming up soon, with regard to waltz and polka.  If you hear of any other event that features a band and enough space to dance, please let us know and we will add it here.  If you would like you can join the email list, who receive blurbs like this, more often than we seem to manage updating the web site...

Tuesday, June 10 = This evening we will be covering Mazurka, that pointy-toed waltz variation that lets you skip a beat now and then.  If you've never had Mazurka, get it in your system before the weekend's Gaskell so you can say "yes" to more songs!

Friday, June 13 = Our next dance at UC Davis.  Waltz is on fire!  We've found our new home in the old Firehouse, now annexed to the Drama department as a rehearsal space.  This is an upgrade since it's not in the basement and you have less chances to get lost finding it. :) It's just off A street just south of 1st, it's the little building next to the gate that keeps cars from driving onto campus.  Lessons at 8, DJ dance 9-12.  Sponsored by the Vintage Waltz Workshop, a student organization at UC Davis.  Suggested donation $8 ($6 students).

Saturday, June 14 = the Gaskell Victorian Ball.  At the Scottish Rite Temple on Lakeside Drive in Oakland.  The Brassworks plays at 8:30 and fancy costumage is the way to go.  $20 at the door.  Note there is no FNW dance tonight 'cause everyone's going to the ball.  :)

Tuesday, June 17 = Happy Wedding Day!  To celebrate all those marriages that waited until today to be made official, I think I must bring a wedding cake.  Anyone want to bring the champagne?  Oh and we're teaching cross-step waltz.

Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22 =  The Free Folk Festival, held at the City College of San Francisco.  Two days and nights of classes in many kinds of dancing, music, storytelling, etc.  Especially note there will be a mostly-partner-dancing dance party on Saturday night, when the Brassworks plays 8-10.

Tuesday, June 24 =  Ever wished the person you were dancing with had A Clue?  Tonight we will cover lead and follow cues: what the common and not-so-common signs are and how to interpret them, in waltz.

Friday, June 27 = Vintage Invasion, the friendliest dance party ever.  Bring a friend or make one!  :)  Held at the Finnish Brotherhood Hall, at Chestnut & University (that's your highway exit), Berkeley.  Lessons at 8, dancing 9-12, potluck munchies, and a fun variety of music.

Tuesday, July 1 = Tonight we get fancy and teach Zweifacher, which means "two parts": the meter changes back and forth so that sometimes you waltz and sometimes you pivot.

Wednesday, July 2 = Our Summer series in Victorian Waltz begins at UC Davis.  For summer we've moved up an hour to 8:15, so if you have friends who have kids or early-am jobs, now is the time to bring them along.  $35 for the set of 6 Wednesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and Aug 6.  Even people with no dance experience when they first join, are able to waltz well enough by the end of the series that they can go out to dance parties and live it up.  Those who are joining the class for the second or third time, will get new moves, more confidence, increase their coordination and their social circle. :)  www.experimentalcollege.org

Here is a calendar you can print out and hang up, of all vintage dances and classes we know of...
